Much has been written about the chronic and critical shortage of cyber engineers, with a global estimate of up to 4M unfilled positions. Less often discussed are the skill gaps within the community of cyber engineers already reporting for duty. Cyber threats move at the speed of the attacker, where adversaries set the pace of innovation. As a result of this unusual dynamic, cyber may be the fastest area of innovation in all of information technology. If you can't match the pace of the attackers, you are going to get breached, period. Accordingly, more needs to be done to continually increase and enhance the skill levels of our digital defenders... A few thoughts on this dynamic in my monthly Blog post for RSA...

Cyber professional development needs a serious refresh. The overall IT market moves very fast—and security requirements even faster—because serious hackers are constantly changing their attack methodologies, regularly forcing cyber pros to scramble to keep up. Nonetheless, things are fixable. Needed are better training and support and more flexibility and creativity in hiring.
