Cyber Security is Improving BUT... There is a Long Way to Go.

While the awareness of cyber security threats is up, along with determination to defend against attacks and budgets to support the effort, attacks still happen with growing frequency as threat attackers evolve their playbooks to counter improved defenses. Cyber innovation, unlike most areas of technology, is driven by the "offense" - the hackers and attackers that constantly devise new and increasingly clever ways to compromise the spectrum of new cyber defense tools and technologies.

This "attacker vs defender" tug of war is what underpins the explosive growth of the cyber security market, now the fastest growing area of information technology investment. And yet, for all the resources being deployed, there remains much work to be done. There are things to do better, areas for simplification, a need for a systemic approach to cyber management, all as we prepare for a new series of threat vectors...

Building an ample supply of security tools sounds like a good idea, but mostly is not. A study by Ponemon Institute found that organizations average more than 45 such tools. Those using more than 50 were ranked 8 percent lower in their ability to detect an attack, and 7 percent lower in terms of responding to an attack. The problem: All these tools frequently conflict and undermine each other.
